Zarautz Triathlon 2027: how to prepare it and what to eat and drink

The next edition is on Saturday 12 June 2027 (provisional date: the organisers haven't confirmed it yet; in 2026 it was held on 13 June. The time of each leg is indicative), starting in Getaria (Gipuzkoa, Spain) at 9:30. Here you have the three legs of the Zarauzko Triatloia: the swim, the bike with its profile and feed stations, and the run with split times, what's at each aid station, how much to eat and drink and the usual weather.

Swim (2.8 km): the swim

From Getaria to Zarautz in open sea; there are water bottles before the start and no stations during the crossing.

Bike (80 km): what to eat and drink

How much a typical rider (72 kg) needs depending on their time. From 2–3 hours on, what matters most is eating carbs regularly (every 20–30 minutes) and drinking before you're thirsty.

Total timeCarbs per hourTotal carbsDrink per hourTotal drinkSodium per hour
2 h 3060 g/h110 g550 ml/h1.4 l450 mg/h
3 h75 g/h150 g550 ml/h1.7 l450 mg/h
3 h 3075 g/h185 g550 ml/h1.9 l450 mg/h
4 h75 g/h220 g550 ml/h2.2 l450 mg/h

More than 60–90 g of carbs per hour only if you've trained it. Don't try on race day what you haven't tolerated in training.

Feed stations

Km 1.8, 34 and 74 (Meagas / Loinaz farmhouse): water, Powerade, gels, bars and bananas; km 62 (Zumaia roundabout): water, sports drink, gels and bars.

Without the official track loaded we don't work out the section-by-section plan. In WinWatts, with your GPX, you see how much to eat and drink between each feed station at your pace on every climb.

Split times

At an even pace (we haven't loaded the official track yet, so climbs and descents aren't adjusted: use it as a reference), with the clock time counted from when you start running (indicative: it depends on how long you take to swim and ride). You start with the bike in your legs: begin below your clean marathon pace. Write yours down or wear them on a pace band: watch GPS usually reads long.

Aid stations: what's there and how much to drink

For a typical runner finishing in about 1 h 45: sip without stopping and take each gel just before an aid station, to wash it down with water. The organisers hand out gels at km 0.4, 3, 6.6, 9.2, 12.8, 15.4 and 19: if they match your plan, those are gels you don't need to carry.

How many gels and how much to drink

What a typical runner (68 kg) needs depending on their time, with 35 g gels. When running the stomach tolerates less than on the bike: more than 60 g of carbs per hour only if you've trained it. Gels alone don't reach that figure (the first one comes around 45 minutes and none are due in the last half hour): the rest comes from drinking sports drink instead of water at a few aid stations.

TimeCarbs per hourGelsTotal drinkSodium per hour
1 h 3060 g/h1 × 35 g1.0 l450 mg/h
1 h 4560 g/h2 × 35 g1.2 l450 mg/h
2 h60 g/h2 × 35 g1.4 l450 mg/h
2 h 1560 g/h2 × 35 g1.6 l450 mg/h

Nothing new on race day: gels, breakfast, shoes and socks, all tested on your long runs. Vaseline on your feet, groin and armpits, and protect your nipples. If it's cold at the start, wait in your corral in old clothes you can throw away.
